Sustainable Christmas Craft for Kids

Sustainable Christmas Craft for Kids

Hello Bumblenoodles.

I can’t quite believe we are on the countdown to Christmas already.  Why does it seem to creep up unexpectedly every year without fail, despite all the best intentions to plan ahead?!

If you’ve been following along for a while, it probably comes as no surprise that, as a family run brand, we are huge fans of kids themed activities, rolling up our sleeves and getting messy.

So, with that in mind, we thought it would be fun to kick off the festivities with a few sweet, sustainable seasonal crafts that the whole family can get involved with.

Take A Walk On The Wild Side

As the mantra goes, Christmas is all about giving, and that includes giving back too. Handmade cards are a lovely way to bring a special touch that money just can’t buy, whether you’re crafting to send to loved ones or, just as a fun activity to enjoy together when the weather takes a turn.

A perfect way to start the process is to get out in nature and gather your supplies by ‘hunting’ for treasure. Obviously kiddies are huge fans of exploring and scavenging, so it’s a great excuse to get outside. The general idea is to find treasures that you can up-cycle, recycle and take inspiration from the wild and wonderful outdoors.

Getting out into nature

For our two cute craft activities, you will need pinecones, which should be in abundance at this time of year, and a selection of leaves of varying sizes. You can always cut them down to size if you do find some whoppers, so don’t worry too much. The idea is just let the kids run wild and enjoy the adventure of ‘hunting’ for all the amazing things that nature has to offer.

Hunting for 'treasures'

Ready, Steady, Craft!

Activity 1. ‘Pinecone Prints’ Christmas Card Craft

You Will Need:

  • Small pinecones (gathered from outside or a nature walk)
  • Coloured paint (any will do but you could use seasonal colours like green and red for a more traditional feel, or just go wild and wacky and use any colour combo that takes your fancy)
  • Recycled card or paper

Let’s Craft:

  1. Take your paints and squeeze or pour a generous amount onto a plate or shallow container (used butter lids work well for this). Use as many paint colours as you like.
  2. Take your card and fold it in half to make a traditional, opening card shape. It doesn’t matter what size the card is that you use, you can go large or small or even mini sized and turn them into gift tags too.
  3. Take a pinecone and dip the ends into the paint, then roll across the card to create beautiful, rustic patterns. There are no rules here, which makes it a wonderfully freeing activity where little ones can just create to their hearts content. Repeat the process as many times as you like, with as many colours as you like.
  4. Leave them to dry and that’s it – your cards are ready to write and send to someone special.

Top Tip:  If you fancy an extra touch of sparkle, you can add glitter or anything else that you have lying around In your craft drawer, for a final festive flourish.

Making leaf Christmas cards

Activity 2: DIY Leaf Christmas Tree Card Craft

You Will Need

  • A selection of leaves (gathered from outside or a nature walk)
  • Recycled card or paper
  • Glue
  • Glitter
  • Scissors

Let’s Craft

  1. Take a piece of card or paper and fold into a traditional card shape.
  2. Next, take a selection of leaves and loosely arrange them into a tree shape, starting with the largest at the bottom, working up to the smallest at the very top.
  3. Once you are happy with your tree, glue them down and set aside to dry.
  4. Once dry, ask little helpers to sprinkle on some glitter or even add little sequins or buttons as Christmas decorations.
  5. Don’t forget to add the star on top of the tree! You could cut out a star shape from recycled paper and colour it in, or maybe use small twigs to form a more natural star shape and glue them down.

Top Tip: You could use some cotton wool to add a lovely snowy effect to the branches.
